When Are the LA 2028 Olympics? Key Dates and Schedule

Let's start with the essentials. The 2028 Olympics Los Angeles Opening Ceremony will light up the iconic LA Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium on July 14, 2028, with competition running through July 30, 2028. The Paralympic Games will follow from August 15-27, 2028.

Here's what makes the schedule particularly exciting. Some events, including basketball, baseball, and soccer, will begin on July 12. This is two full days before the Opening Ceremony.

The first medal of the Games will be awarded in women's triathlon at Venice Beach on Day 1 (July 15). And that same day will feature the most women's finals ever held in a single day of Olympic competition.

The schedule features a unique twist that swimming fans will love. Track and field will take over the first week at the LA Memorial Coliseum, while swimming moves to the second week at SoFi Stadium. And for those wondering, the marathons will still be on the final weekend, staying true to Olympic tradition.

Why Now Is the Time to Plan Your LA Olympics Trip

Every experienced travel advisor will tell you the same thing. Timing is everything when it comes to major sporting events. The LA28 ticket lottery registration opened in January 2026, with tickets going on sale in April 2026.

Accommodation options near the venues are already being snapped up by savvy travelers who understand that waiting means missing out.

I've watched this pattern repeat itself with every major sporting event I've planned. The travelers who secure their spots early get the best locations, the most flexibility, and honestly, the most peace of mind.

When you plan your LA Olympics trip now, you're not just booking a vacation. You're ensuring you'll be part of an event that Los Angeles will only host for the third time in Olympic history.

The beauty of starting your LA Olympics travel planning now is that you have time to craft the perfect itinerary. You’ll be able to combine Olympic events with all the incredible experiences Los Angeles and Southern California have to offer.

What Makes the 2028 Olympics Los Angeles Special: The Smart Money Approach

Here's something that sets the LA 2028 Olympics apart from every other Olympic Games in recent memory. This is a genuinely sustainable, financially responsible event that's being built on innovation rather than extravagance.

Los Angeles is taking what organizers call the "Smart Money" approach and it's revolutionary. For the first time in 80 years, the Olympics won't build any new permanent venues. Instead, the Games will use LA's incredible roster of existing world-class stadiums and arenas, from the historic LA Memorial Coliseum (hosting its third Olympics) to the ultra-modern SoFi Stadium.

This $7.15 billion privately funded project is designed to be profitable while leaving a lasting legacy. LA28 has committed $160 million to youth sports programs across Los Angeles, particularly in underserved communities. They're implementing "SmartLA 2028" technology upgrades including 10,000 electric vehicle charging stations and aiming for the first-ever "Energy Positive Games" powered by renewable energy.

What does this mean for you as a traveler? You're coming to an Olympic Games that's designed for success, sustainability, and an exceptional visitor experience. The venues are proven. The infrastructure is solid. The commitment to excellence is unwavering.

This isn't a city scrambling to build stadiums that will sit empty after the closing ceremony. This is Los Angeles showcasing the world-class facilities it already has.

The Best Beaches Near LA Olympic Venues

Now let's talk about what makes an LA Olympics and beach vacation the dream combination. One of the most incredible aspects of the LA 2028 Olympics is how many venues are located near some of the world's most beautiful beaches.

Venice Beach

Venice Beach will host the triathlon and serve as the starting point for both the marathon and cycling road courses. The iconic boardwalk, street performers, Muscle Beach, and vibrant atmosphere make this a must-visit destination. You can literally watch Olympic athletes compete in the morning and soak up the California beach culture in the afternoon.

Santa Monica

Santa Monica is just a few miles north of many Olympic venues and offers the perfect family-friendly beach experience. The Santa Monica Pier, with its historic carousel and Pacific Park amusement attractions, is an absolute must. The Third Street Promenade provides fantastic shopping and dining. And the beach itself stretches for miles with perfect sand and reliable waves.

Alamitos Beach

Alamitos Beach in Long Beach will host beach volleyball, and this location offers a more relaxed beach town vibe. Long Beach is hosting multiple Olympic events including open water swimming and sailing at Belmont Shore. This makes it an excellent home base for beach-loving sports fans.

Malibu

Malibu sits about 30 miles up the Pacific Coast Highway and offers some of the most stunning coastal scenery in Southern California. Surfrider Beach, Zuma Beach, and El Matador State Beach provide perfect day-trip destinations when you want to escape the Olympic crowds and experience quintessential California coastal beauty.

Things to Do in Los Angeles During 2028 Olympics (When You're Not at the Games)

This is where the LA 2028 family vacation truly becomes special. What can you do in Los Angeles when you're not at the Olympics? The real question is… What can't you do?

Hollywood and Entertainment

Can you visit Hollywood during the 2028 Olympics? Absolutely, and you should! The Hollywood attractions near Olympics LA venues are some of the most iconic experiences in the world.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame and TCL Chinese Theatre are must-sees. And while they'll certainly be busy during the Games, they're open and waiting for you.

Griffith Observatory offers breathtaking views of the city and the Hollywood sign. Plus, world-class astronomy exhibits that fascinate visitors of all ages.

Universal Studios during the LA Olympics will be an adventure unlike any other. The theme park will be hosting squash competitions at a venue on the Universal Studios lot. This will add Olympic excitement to an already thrilling destination. The studio tour, Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and incredible rides make this a perfect day for families between Olympic events.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour and Paramount Studios offer behind-the-scenes looks at working Hollywood studios. These tours book up quickly even in normal times, so reserving your spots early is essential.

World-Class Museums and Cultural Attractions

The Getty Center is one of my personal favorite cultural experiences in Los Angeles. Perched in the hills with stunning architecture and gardens, it houses an incredible art collection and offers panoramic city views.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is the largest art museum in the western United States. The iconic "Urban Light" installation with 202 vintage streetlamps has become one of the most photographed spots in LA.

The Natural History Museum and California Science Center (home to the Space Shuttle Endeavour) offer fascinating experiences for curious minds of all ages.

Family-Friendly Activities Near LA 2028 Olympic Stadiums

When families ask me about the best attractions near LA Olympic venues, I always emphasize how many family-friendly activities near LA 2028 Olympic stadiums are available.

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure in Anaheim are about 30-40 minutes from many Olympic venues. This makes them perfect for a day trip or even a pre- or post-Olympics extension. The magic of Disney combined with Olympic excitement creates an unforgettable family experience.

The Santa Monica Pier offers rides, games, and the Pacific Park amusement park right on the beach. It's the perfect blend of classic California boardwalk fun and beautiful ocean views.

The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach (which is hosting several Olympic events) features over 12,000 animals and interactive exhibits that captivate children and adults alike.

Iconic LA Experiences to Combine with the Olympics

The most iconic LA experiences to combine with the Olympics go beyond the typical tourist attractions.

Let me share some of my favorite recommendations:

The Pacific Coast Highway drive during the Olympics is absolutely magical. Head north toward Malibu or south toward Laguna Beach. The coastal scenery, charming beach towns, and incredible photo opportunities make this one of the world's great driving experiences.

Sunset at El Matador Beach in Malibu offers dramatic rock formations, secluded coves, and some of the most stunning sunset views you'll ever witness. Arrive about an hour before sunset for the best experience.

Hiking Runyon Canyon gives you that quintessential LA experience. This is a moderate hike with incredible views of the Hollywood sign and downtown skyline. Plus, on clear days, you can see all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

The Original Farmers Market and The Grove offer a fantastic combination of food stalls, shops, and people-watching. Grab lunch from one of the international food vendors and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

For shopping enthusiasts, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills delivers that luxurious California experience you've seen in countless movies.

How to Maximize Your Time During the LA 2028 Olympics

Here's my best strategy for combining the Olympics and Los Angeles tourism. Think in zones and build your days around venue locations.

Downtown LA Zone

When you're attending events at the LA Convention Center (fencing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, wrestling), the Peacock Theater (weightlifting), or the Crypto.com Arena, extend your day by exploring Grand Central Market, the Arts District, or Little Tokyo.

Beach Zone

If you're watching beach volleyball at Alamitos Beach, triathlon at Venice Beach, or surfing at Trestles Beach in San Clemente, embrace the full beach day. Pack sunscreen, arrive early, and stay late to enjoy the coastal atmosphere.

SoFi/Inglewood Zone

SoFi Stadium will host swimming in the second week. Combine this with visits to Hollywood Park, nearby shopping, or make the short drive to Manhattan Beach for dinner with ocean views.

Long Beach Zone

With open water swimming, sailing, rowing, and canoe sprint all in Long Beach, you can easily spend an entire day in this vibrant coastal city. The Queen Mary, Shoreline Village, and the aquarium are all nearby.

Creating the Perfect LA Olympics and California Coast Road Trip

One of the questions I get most often is about the LA Olympics and California coast road trip possibilities. The beauty of Los Angeles' location is that you're positioned perfectly for incredible extensions.

Santa Barbara is 90 minutes north and offers a completely different Southern California vibe. It’s more relaxed with Spanish colonial architecture. Plus, incredible wine country is just minutes away, along with beautiful beaches.

Laguna Beach and the Orange County coastline sit about an hour south. Crystal Cove State Park, the charming village atmosphere of Laguna Beach, and the upscale shops and restaurants of Newport Beach create a perfect coastal extension.

For the truly adventurous, Big Sur is one of the most spectacular coastal drives in the world, about 5-6 hours north of LA. If you have time before or after the Olympics, this extension is absolutely worth it.

What to Pack for Your LA Olympics Vacation

Let me share my packing wisdom gained from years of planning sporting event trips. What to pack for LA Olympics vacation depends on understanding Southern California's summer weather.

Weather Expectations

July and August in Los Angeles typically bring warm, sunny days with temperatures in the 70s-80s°F along the coast and 80s-90s°F inland. However, mornings and evenings can be cooler, especially near the beach. The marine layer (morning fog) is common along the coast.

Layering is Essential

Air-conditioned indoor venues can be quite cool, while outdoor events can be hot. Pack light layers you can easily add or remove. A light jacket or sweater for evenings is essential.

Beach Essentials

Sunscreen (and lots of it—reapply frequently), sunglasses, a hat, beach towel, and swimsuit are non-negotiable. The California sun is stronger than you think.

Comfortable Walking Shoes

You'll be doing a lot of walking between venues, attractions, and through the city. Invest in comfortable shoes broken in well before your trip. Trust me on this one.

Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is crucial, and LA venues will have water refill stations.

Casual California Style

Los Angeles is generally casual. Comfortable, breathable fabrics work for most situations. You'll want at least one slightly dressier outfit for nicer restaurants, but even upscale LA dining is relatively relaxed.

LA Olympics Travel Planning: Your Next Steps

So, what makes now the right time to plan your LA 2028 vacation? Simply put… The best opportunities are available now, and they won't last.

Ticket registration for the LA28 ticket draw is already open. Registration doesn't guarantee tickets, but you can't get tickets without registering. The lottery system will allocate tickets when they go on sale in April 2026.

Accommodation near desirable venues and beach locations is already being reserved by experienced travelers. The closer we get to July 2028, the fewer options and higher prices you'll face.

Creating your personalized itinerary takes time, and starting now gives you the luxury of researching, planning, and refining your perfect plan for an amazing LA Olympics getaway while working with me.

My recommendation? Start by identifying which Olympic sports you most want to see. Research the venues where they'll compete. Then build your accommodation and sightseeing plans around those anchor events. Think about how to experience both Olympics and beach culture in LA, because that combination is what makes this opportunity so unique.

Consider which experiences outside the LA Olympics matter most to your family or travel companions. Are you beach people? Culture and museum enthusiasts? Theme park fans? Food lovers? Entertainment seekers? LA offers all of it, and the key is prioritizing what will create your most memorable vacation.

The Dream Awaits

The LA 2028 Olympics offer something truly special. A chance to experience world-class athletic competition in a city that's a destination unto itself. From the iconic beaches where Olympic athletes will compete in triathlons and beach volleyball, to the Hollywood landmarks you've seen in countless films, to the hidden gems that make Los Angeles endlessly fascinating, this is the California dream vacation you've always imagined.

I've had the privilege of planning many types of sporting event vacations, and I can tell you that the ones people remember for a lifetime are the ones where they didn't just attend the event. They spent time embracing the entire destination. That's what the 2028 Olympics Los Angeles invites you to do.

Start planning now. Register for the ticket lottery. Dream about which beaches you'll visit, which Hollywood attractions you'll explore, and which Olympic moments you'll witness in person. The smart travelers are already planning their California dream vacation and I can't wait to help you create yours.

After all, the Olympics only come to Los Angeles once every few generations. This is your time.
